Every street can’t handle every use


Seattle Mayor Ed Murray announced his comprehensive transit plan but said it’s time to stop trying to make every street work for every mode.


This is dead on. It is easy to get carried away with compete streets, especially if you have been deprived of multi-modal transportation. It just makes sense to group certain kinds of traffic. For instance you could group car packed streets (high ADT) with streetcars and sidewalks, you could group low ADT streets with bike lanes and more sidewalks. Very very low ADT streets coupled with low speed limits may be able to get away with wide streets that do not specifically delineate sidewalk/ bike lane/ car lane. There are many combinations of cars, transit, bikes, sidewalks, speed limits, traffic calming, street widths and paint that can create a transportation system that is safe and effective for everyone.
